Having to plug in your electric vehicle may soon become an extinct charging method. Infiniti is planning to introduce an all-new wireless inductive charging system for the 2014 Infiniti EV. Infiniti EV drivers won't have to wait and find a secure and easy place to charge their cars; they will be able to do so without any cords. This charging system employs an electromagnetic field from a coil covered in the ground to send charge to the vehicle's exhausted battery pack. Technology that is quite similar to this is currently being used in smartphone charging pads, among other technologies. This new system will let drivers park their vehicles over the designated charging space and be able to come back to a fully charged vehicle.
Infiniti says the new charging system is currently about 80-90 percent efficient depending on how well the car is in line with the charging area. That's about the same range as a traditional conductive plug-in charger due to the loss of electricity between the plug on the wall and the plug on the vehicle. The most noticeable benefits for this product will be for city drivers, as the product could eventually make plug-in chargers obsolete. EVs traveling the highway or in the city could even join in on wireless charging with charging "on-the-go." Ideas for future plans from Infiniti include wireless-charging stations at rest stops and under stop lights. Charges would go directly to the driver's bank account. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has a group working on creating a standard for wireless charging, which should be in place by 2014.
